Hold on to your honey jars, 'cause there's a fuzzy bear around! Scrubby Bear, Regional's Goodwill Ambassador, and his team work to teach the children of our community about general health practices, personal protection, safety, and health career exploration. Scrubby is committed to bringing healthcare and safety down to a child's level. He also sponsors field trips to the hospitals, introducing children to the hospital's sights and sounds. If you'd like to have Scrubby Bear visit your elementary or preschool, give us a call at 205-752-5050. Whether you are hosting a safety week, a special activity, or just want to present students with a short and "edu-taining" program, Scrubby and his team would love to stop by and give you a hand.
Mommy and Me (Pre-K) Designed for pre-K children and their mothers, this program is a storytime where children are read a book about the hospital - a book such as "A Trip to the Hospital" by Bill Crosby or "Franklin Goes to the Hospital" by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark. A certified car set fitter will be available to do car seat checks, and a registered nurse will be available to answer medical questions from mothers. Program time: approx. 30 minutes The Friendly Fireman (Pre-K & Grades K - 3) The County Fire & EMS Friendly Fireman joins scrubby on this school visit. Children get a firsthand look at the big red truck. Children are also taught not to be afraid if they are ever in need of the friendly fireman's services, learn what to do in case of a fire, and meet a friendly fireman dressed in full gear. Program time: approx. 30 minutes Stay Away from Boo-Boos (Grades K - 2) Safety issues in a variety of areas are covered in this program. Topics include: safety hazards around the house, stranger danger, and calling for help. Basic first aid information is also taught. The goal is to teach children how to stay safe in various situations. Program time: approx. 30 minutes Germ Busters (Pre-K & Grades K - 3) This interactive presentation teaches children about germs. Through a fun, interactive story involving Scrubby Bear, children are taught the importance of hand washing and practice washing their hands. With the help of our "magic" solution and "magic" light, kids actually see germs on their hands! Program time: approx. 45 minutes Hello Hospital! (Grades K - 3) During a field trip to Regional Medical Center, this program introduces the sights and sounds of the hospital. Children learn how to listen to their own heartbeat using a stethoscope. The goal is to help children become familiar with a hospital setting so they are less frightened next time they visit. Program time: approx. 30 minutes Injury Prevention (Grades K - 3) With the help of the County Fire and EMS, children are taught what to do in case of a fire. They are taught the basic principals - Stop, Drop, and Roll - and practice the techniques they learn. They are also taught important information about wearing a safety belt and airbag safety. Program time: approx. 30 minutes |
